  • Project Management: Coordinates and monitors activities within the Maintenance Excellence program.

  • Reviews plans and monitors status of implementation for those people assigned to effort, participates in site assessments.

  • Estimates and coordinates resources needed (materials, budget, time and people) to accomplish assigned individual tasks.

  • Participates in economic analysis and feasibility studies.

  • Jointly responsible for achieving financial targets in support of business objectives.

  • Technical Design: Independently gathers maintenance and manufacturing performance data (Maximo, Zarpac, etc.), and performs preliminary analysis. Reports findings.

  • Prepares and communicates recommendations and respective action plans to drive cost reduction efforts.

  • Anticipates future directions.

  • Benchmarks internally and externally.

  • Assists with deployment of predictive and reliability centered maintenance strategies.

Problem Solving:

  • Provide a centralized, strategic look across equipment performance (downtime), material/component failure analysis, and changeovers.

  • Predicts patterns and trends.

  • Grasps complexities and sees relationships among data.

  • Determines consequences and alternatives, makes recommendation, analyses problems from multiple perspectives, improves maintenance processes.

  • Recognizes and implements process improvements and cost reductions, creatively applies others’ ideas.

  • Facilitates root cause analysis for equipment downtime.

  • Develops and executes reliability studies and evaluation of equipment robustness.

Organizational Interface:

  • Mentors others by sharing information and providing feedback and guidance.

  • Prepares written communication.

  • Conveys information effectively with team members, designers, technicians, and other technical personnel, both internal and external to Abbott, using appropriate communication protocols; obtains approval to proceed with proposed action plans.

  • Establishes networks.

  • Follows through on goals, contributes willingly and incorporates the ideas of others, shares resources, knowledge and accountability to benefit the objectives of the business. Build relationships.

  • Initiates and cultivates open, honest relationships with colleagues, customers, contractors and vendors by establishing rapport, developing an understanding of other’s needs, promoting common goals and flowing through on commitments, (e.g. offers assistance).

  • Interacts effectively with stake holders at appropriate levels of the organization.


  • Complies with all regulations and standards for quality, Environmental, Health, Safety, and Energy (EHSE) Global Policies, Abbott Engineering Standards, and other governance areas as applicable.

  • Ensures quality and effectiveness of assigned tasks.

  • Has awareness of the potential consequences of changes to established processes.

Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Developing procedures and standards.

  • Directing the efforts of other such as technicians and outside resources.

  • Providing training.

  • Supervising the resources for Preventive/Predictive Maintenance.

  • Customer Interface (in support of uptime and meeting production plan) and/or daily performance review meetings.

  • Leads capital plant projects or process improvement initiatives (i.e. Op Ex).

  • Plan, Implement, and perform effectiveness checks for corrective actions on exception reports.

  • If need provide maintenance supervisory coverage.


  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, science or closely related discipline is desired, or equivalent technical experience, plus demonstrated competence, with a desired 2+ years of significant engineering and/or operational experience.

  • Additional post graduate education may contribute towards the desired years of experience.

  • The skill set of this position requires a balance of industrial and mechanical engineering principles, data analysis, process improvement techniques, and problem solving.

  • Possesses a working technical knowledge of maintenance programs.

  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. Familiarity with “reliability centered maintenance” is preferred.

  • Candidate must successfully demonstrate and possess a strong work ethic, safety conscious, philosophy (i.e. zero incident mindset), strong customer service attitude, excellent communication skills, initiative, strong technical knowledge, planning and organizing, teamwork, attention to detail, strong problem solving skills and prior knowledge of computer systems (i.e. Windows, Microsoft Excel, and PowerPoint).

  • Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintenance, and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.

  • Listens to and understands other’s points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one’s own perspective orally, in writing and presentations.

  • Works well with others in a collaborative, fast-paced goal-driven environment.

  • Possesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences.

  • Has a technical background in health care, nutritional products, laboratory diagnostics, medical devices, pharmaceutical, or similar industries (preferred).

  • 5+ years leadership experience or equivalent. Previous experience as a mechanic, electrician, or instrument technician beneficial.

  • Extensive experience in leading/managing projects or process improvement initiatives.

  • Previous Lean Six Sigma training beneficial.

  • Extensive experience in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues.

  • Strong, proven leadership experience required with an emphasis on supervision of direct reports and influence senior leadership.

  • Previous experience in generating and managing financial budgets.

  • Ability to manage a department in the absence of the department manager.

This position could be grade 14 or 16 depending on experience.
