UNC Department of Public Safety Research Technician in Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Description of Work

We seek a research technician for an applied marine ecology and conservation study investigating the most widely recognized and pressing questions about artificial reef design and function. Artificial reefs in coastal ocean waters of North Carolina are prime recreational fishing and diving sites, as well as critical habitat for recreationally and commercially important fish species. This study seeks to address knowledge gaps concerning the function of artificial reefs in order to improve their fish production. Specifically, we will evaluate the effectiveness of novel artificial reef structures and how artificial reefs influence soundscape ecology. Project results will be used to guide management and conservation decisions in North Carolina. Primary technician duties include SCUBA field surveys that will be conducted in North Carolina coastal ocean waters, as well as data management and analysis. The position will be based at the UNC-CH Institute of Marine Sciences, 3431 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC 28557.
