Duties

The incumbent works in Imaging Service at the Denver VA Medical Center, Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS). The Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound Technician) independently preforms standard general imaging and complex ultrasound examinations including non-standard and advanced protocols, and manages the diagnostic ultrasound laboratory, preforming highly technical evaluation of the abdomen, pelvis, thorax, thyroids, prostate, kidneys, aorta, scrotum, and conducts vascular studies and interventional procedure. The incumbent must be competent in the production, use, recognition, and analysis of ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment.

Major duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Perform all ultrasound examination ranging from routine to highly specialized.
  • Perform vascular imaging, both arterial and venous including preparation and supplies, scanning motions, Time Compensated Gain (TCG), zoom or expansion, hard copy, picture oriented examination, organ-oriented examination and initial interpretation of the examination.
  • Assist the radiologist in the performance and guidance of aspirations, biopsies, and catheter placements for the purpose of diagnostic treatment using ultrasound techniques.
  • Participate in the training of physicians, residents, students and other sonographers, current and new staff, sot that these individuals may acquire an understand of the principles of ultrasound, how it relates to other diagnostic exams, and the proper acquisition of ultrasound studies.
  • Utilize all available computer resources such as RIS, VISTA, CPRS and other software applications to preform all clerical procedures related to the processes of ultrasound.
  • Make multiple simultaneous settings and adjustments in operation of equipment to insure accurate results.
  • Review new developments in the field and recommends to the supervisor those that would improve operations.
  • Maintain supplies to ensure timely examinations.
  • Gather related information such as patient charts, x-rays, etc., to ensure correlation of examinations to other studies.
  • Develop and maintain patient preparation procedures so that patients and inpatients wards understand the proper preparation for ultrasound examinations.
  • Perform quality assurance testing on the ultrasound unit using phantoms, test tools, test check lists, etc.
  • Perform and/or supervise routing housekeeping duties to ensure cleanliness of exam rooms and work area.
  • Knowledge of all processes related to reusable medical equipment.
  • Proactively identify administrative, clerical or mechanical problems, and recommend solutions.
  • Ensure courteous, respectful, and cooperative relationships with management, co-workers, patients and the general public.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations:**

GS-9: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-08)which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions being filled. This would be independently preforming standard general imaging and complex ultrasound examinations including non-standard and advanced protocols such as emergency and inpatient, in a highly complex medical facility. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

  1. Knowledge of more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols that pertain to diagnostic ultrasonography.

  2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.

  3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
