The selectee will be returned to his/her respective position of record upon completion of their Detail or Temporary Promotion. Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items. Duties demand for strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Operation of some specialized equipment can cause extended physical stress. Work is performed in both the office and field setting. Work includes exposure to various terrain, weather, smoke and fire conditions.
You will supervise crews performing wildland firefighting and will direct the operation of a Type 4 Heavy Wildland Fire Engines, Type 6 Wildland Fire Engines, or a Fire Suppression Module ensuring proper use, and operation. You will be responsible for oversight during initial attack fires, directing fireline activities, resources, equipment and aircraft. You will ensure the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency dispatch. You will make initial evaluation of fire situations; determine rate of spread and potential hazards to property; suppression method to be used; deployment of crew; and application of water. You will also assist the Fire Operations Supervisor in providing operational oversight and planning wildland fire suppression activities and carrying out normal supervisory responsibilities.

The applicant must meet the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position. In accordance with Public Law 107-27, applicants shall not have reached the age 37 at the time of appointment unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian service in a covered position or are a preference eligible veteran. This constitutes an exception to the Age discrimination in Employment Act. *Duties are rigorous and employment is limited to young and physically vigorous individuals. The incumbent is subject to a medical examination and must pass the work capacity test for arduous positions.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. GS ONLY: Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
To qualify at the GS-06 level, you must meet the Selective Factors and have at least one year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-05) in the Federal Service OR have completed 1 full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level college education related to range technician fire work, such as a major study in forestry, fire science or a subject-matter field directly related to this position OR have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education. To qualify at the GS-07 level, you must meet the Selective Factors and have at least one year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-06) in the Federal Service OR have one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level college education in a field directly related to range technician fire work such as a major study in forestry, fire science or a field directly related to this position OR have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.

This is an opportunity for a Detail or Temporary Promotion and will be for a period not-to-exceed one year, however, it may be terminated at an earlier date. Upon the completion of the Detail or Temporary Promotion, you will be returned to your position from which you were temporarily promoted, or to a different position of equivalent grade and pay. This will not be considered an adverse action. This is a career seasonal appointment; you will be in a pay status 26-50 weeks per year. This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements. The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37; unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday.
