EVMS Maintenance Engineer, Painter in Norfolk, Virginia

Preventative/corrective maintenance of EVMS buildings and facilities. Major areas of concentration include painting, HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other environmental systems. This position is required to work the evening shift (3:30pm - midnight).

  • Primary responsibility will be to perform painting. Other duties may require at times preventive maintenance and routine maintenance on HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems throughout EVMS buildings and apartments during the evening shift.

  • Answer and direct phone calls and emails from EVMS staff, employees, vendors, and outside contractors relating to work-orders.

  • Assists in the coordination of all heating and cooling operations.

  • Performs regular preventive maintenance on equipment, and campus facilities as directed by Maintenance Supervisor and provides documentation of completed work.

  • Performs buildings and grounds maintenance/up-keep as needed; e.g., changing light bulbs, changing filters, cleaning maintenance equipment closets, etc.

  • Identifies parts to be repaired, inventories critical spare parts, and recommends ordering of non-stock items.

  • Assist with demolition, repair, and renovations of offices and other areas.

  • Responsible for installing cabinets, shelves, pictures, and patient care equipment.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Completion of a two (2) year apprenticeship program. Five (5) years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education or experience is required. Experience with different types of paint and paint systems. Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams. Must have a valid Virginia Driver's License and be insurable through EVMS insurance carrier.


  • Must possess skills and ability to perform multiple tasks.

  • Knowledge of trades related to building maintenance and repair.

  • Must be able to safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the maintenance trade.

  • Skill in following safety practices and recognizing hazards. Must be able to handle hazardous materials safely and understand electrical hazards and risks.

  • Skill in reading and following blueprints, as-built drawings, floorplans, and schematics.

  • Problem solving to identify issues and select action plans.

  • Knowledge and ability to understand multi-step written and oral instructions.

  • Flexibility to work with others and to work with a wide diversity of people.

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing work priorities. Develop effective working relationships, display some mechanical aptitude, work under time constraints, and comply with OSHA/TOSHA regulations.

  • Ability to operate department vehicles, hand trucks, and manual pallet jack.

  • Ability to work at heights from ladders and scaffolding.
