Under the supervision of the Director, Clinical Coordinator, or staff nurse, the Kidney Dialysis Technician performs various duties to assist in the treatment and care of ESRD patients in accordance with established policies and procedures of the Medical Center. The Dialysis Technician performs those direct care activities which are allowed to be delegated to unlicensed personnel under the NYS Practice Act, regulations, hospital policies, and standards met by Nursing Services. The Kidney Dialysis Technician also performs support functions for the unit/department as assigned by the appropriate Registered Nurse and/or manager. He/She is responsible to provide support and assistance to the medical and nursing staff to assure a coordinated patient experience. Duties may include, but are not limited to dialyzer reprocessing, obtaining supplies and equipment necessary before, during and after a dialysis procedure, assisting with patient care under the direct supervision of an RN, assisting with station turnover, assisting with a variety of therapeutic interventions, participating in the dialysis care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, and cleaning, stocking, and organizing the dialysis treatment area and all support areas. He/She must be reliable, work independently, be highly organized, capable of anticipating where assistance is needed and work well with people. He/She must meet the unique demands of a fast paced, dialysis environment meeting quality outcomes in an economically viable and customer friendly way.
As directed, takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, intake/output measurements, blood pressure, and pulse oximetry.
Provides care to the patient requiring specimen collection.
Documents/Communicates care consistently and timely to RN to include any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient.
Assists in maintaining a safe, clean, stocked and functional environment by reporting equipment that is out of order.
Provides care according to standards to the patient requiring restraints/ protective/supportive devices, fall protocol, wandering/elopement/ suicide/ abduction and seizure precautions.
Provides care to the patient with skin care and nutritional needs.
Performs in crisis and emergency (e.g. cardiopulmonary arrest, blood loss and the Heimlich maneuver) while maintaining a positive calm approach.
Assists with positioning patient, lifting and turning patient with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment as necessary, and ambulating the patient as directed
Provides care using infection control practices as outlined in Medical Center policies/procedures (e.g. Universal Standard Precautions and Isolation Techniques).
Demonstrates knowledge/ability to effectively use applicable devices and technology (computer patient lift, etc).
Assists with care for the newly admitted, transferred, and discharged patient or expired patient (post mortem care).
Strives to maintain a patient’s maximum level of independence and encourages family participation.
Assists other team members in accomplishment of patient care and/or unit tasks.
Supports fluctuation in patient care needs by overtime when required
Provides care to patients with acute and chronic renal failure from young adult to geriatric.
Provides care for patients requiring basic dialysis procedures.
Maintains a safe and accessible water supply for hemodialysis.
Provides a reprocessed dialyzer for patient hemodialysis treatment.
Maintains supply inventory to ensure hemodialysis treatments can be initiated/completed.
Other duties as assigned.
High school graduate.
Meets requirements of pre-employment screening and physical.
Previous patient care experience required. Applicants with prior patient care experience (NA, CNA) will be considered first.
Previous experience with renal/dialysis patients.
Ability to anticipate, prioritize, perform and complete multiple job responsibilities in a timely manner.
Ability to deal directly with patients / families.
Ability to work independently under stressful conditions.
Requires excellent teamwork and communication skills in voice control/tone, body language, manners, attitude, accuracy and listening.
Requires excellent customer service skills
Computer knowledge or ability / willingness to learn computer skills.
Ability to work with chemicals and disinfectants utilized in the dialysis process and dialyzel reprocessing area.
As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.

Hours Per Pay Period (For Portal Display): 80 Hours
Weekend Requirements: Working every other weekend required and holidays as scheduled
