Scientist II (Polymeric Materials Specialist) —Pleasanton, CA
The Scientist II (Polymeric Materials Specialist) role will drive new technology/materials for contact lens applications and provide significant contributions lens programs. The ideal candidate will interact with all cross-functional groups within R&D and with selected external vendors and suppliers.
Generate novel concepts for new materials and additives for use in soft contact lens development. Perform characterization of new and existing products and developing new characterization methods. Engage with vendors and partners to leverage external technology as appropriate. Communicate work (written and oral) through technical reports and presentations. Manage time efficiently to deliver scientific results for research programs within timelines. Collaborate with chemists, engineers, biologists, and clinicians in internal, cross-departmental, and/or external teams to identify challenges and develop solutions. Keep detailed and organized laboratory notebooks and documentation.
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
Requires in-depth understanding of structure-property relationships for polymers and complex materials, controlled release technologies for small and large molecules. Strong knowledge of physical chemistry/polymer science, thorough analytical characterization skills, and creative problem solving skills are needed. Excellent team-work and communication skills are required.
Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline from an accredited college or university. Research experience in physical chemistry, polymer chemistry, colloid science. Experience with controlled release technologies for delivery of small molecules. Knowledge of transport and interaction of water soluble polymers and proteins and through hydrogels. Strong knowledge in polymer based systems such as films, coatings and gels (preferably contact lens). Experience with relevant analytical techniques a plus – e.g. interfacial properties (surface/interfacial tension), micro structural analysis (SEM, X-ray techniques), surface properties (confocal microscopy, AFM) Excellent problem solving ability with minimum supervision. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work as a team player and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
