Job Summary

In this role, the successful candidate is expected to be fully competent in most aspects of engineering disciplines and will support the Material Standards group in the selection of protective equipment on the distribution system. This position is distinguished from the Engineer II role by the increased complexity of engineering skillsets required.

Specifically, this position will be responsible for managing various materials specifications, equipment communications (i.e. cellular modems) and troubleshoot issues on reclosers, padmounted switchgear and line monitors/sensors (other material may be assigned as needed). It will be necessary for this person to represent Dominion Energy - Distribution Reliability within the industry and among other groups within Dominion Energy. Effectively communicating material and technology changes throughout the organization will be necessary. The successful candidate will aid in keeping material requirements updated and will serve as a subject matter expert in Electric Distribution by providing technical guidance on complex matters. Perform other duties as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and select new equipment that supports the safe, reliable and cost effective operation of the electric distribution system.

  • Support root cause analysis activities and provide technical expertise to vendors on material design, manufacturing and testing requirements.

  • Maintain effective relationships with vendors to ensure information on existing and new products/features is up-to-date and offers the best value.

  • Manage software and programming requirements for a variety of protective equipment and automation systems.

  • Perform communication integration on distribution controls which includes setup and testing.

  • Periodic coordination and communication will be necessary with other groups in leading technical efforts.

  • Conduct presentations and provide supporting documents to trainers/field personnel on new products as necessary.

  • Respond to multiple emails and phone calls to help others resolve unique application issues.

  • Track, analyze and report material performance issues using the MRS process.

  • Ensure the MRS SharePoint site is updated to support departmental and field processes.

  • Attend field visits, plant visits, material/product meetings and various industry conferences.

  • Represent Dominion Energy’s best interest by attending various industry organization meetings/conferences.

  • Support restoration activities as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of electric utility, relevant manufacturing (i.e. protective equipment) and/or relevant communications experience.

  • Solid knowledge in the design and construction of electric distribution facilities.

  • Solid understanding or ability to learn various computer application skills including fault analysis software, relay test set software, communication protocol testing software, AutoCAD, and a variety of distribution control programming software packages.

  • Solid understanding of AC fundamentals and three-phase power systems.

  • Ability to develop engineering specifications, processes and procedures. This should be accomplished while using basic engineering judgment, evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve objectives.

  • Ability to think analytically and solve technical problems.

  • Ability to interpret technical literature such as national codes, industry guides/standards, regulations and policies.

  • Effective oral, interpersonal and written communication skills.

  • Solid team player and works well with others.

  • Self-motivator who has the ability to work cooperatively in a team environment, but is also comfortable with working independently to get things done.

  • Strong time management and organizational skills.

  • Ability to react promptly to urgent matters while ensuring planned work doesn’t fall behind.

  • Experience with interpreting technical drawings (i.e., wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, outline drawings, oneline diagrams) is a plus.

  • Basic knowledge of serial and Ethernet based applications as it pertains to device communications.

  • Valid driver's license

Education Equivalent

Bachelor degree in engineering is required: Electrical or Computer Engineering strongly preferred.

Must possess one of the following:

  • 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country’s own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that will recognized by the country’s accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or

  • 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and post-graduate electrical engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • A current, valid U.S. Professional Engineering license.
