About the Position:The Watervliet Arsenal is an Army-owned and -operated manufacturing center located in New York. It is the oldest, continuously active arsenal in the United States having begun operations in 1813. Today it is relied upon by U.S. and foreign militaries to produce the most advanced, high-powered weaponry for cannon, howitzer, and mortar systems. The Arsenal is the only location in the DoD that has a weapons research facility (Benét Laboratories) collocated with a manufacturing facility (Arsenal).

Duties

Works on industrial plant equipment demonstrating expert skill in malfunction diagnostics by applying a high degree of knowledge of diverse occupational areas which include the machinist, electronic, hydraulic, mechanical repair/rebuild, instrumentation and electrical trade areas. In performing diagnostics, uses precision instruments and gauging that include the full complement of machinist measuring tools. Repairs and rebuilds intricate production on other special purpose hydraulic systems. Corrects improper functioning of units caused by conditions of misadjustment, gases, improper restrictions, minute leaks in hydraulic-hookups, pressure temperature changes and their effect on hydraulic systems. Performs preventive maintenance, trouble-shooting, repair, installation, modification and rebuilding of electronic and electrical controlling elements of numerically controlled machine tools. Improvises test equipment and special purpose devices as required. Checks machining set-up, programming and the condition of the tools used in the stock removal operation. On new start operations, determines the validity of the program with respect to the machine capabilities and the cutting tools being used. Determines from the nature of the malfunction and the results of investigating, the sequence of symptoms leading to the final breakdown, the most probable points in the manufacturing system that the malfunctions exist.

SCREEN OUT ELEMENT: Your resume must indicate your ability to perform the work of a Electronic Industrial Controls Mechanic without more than normal supervision as outlined in the duties of the position which includes the ability to: (1) Overhaul, installation, maintenance, testing and repair of various types of electronically controlled industrial equipment and/or machinery; (2) Applied knowledge of electronic theory and circuits and basic logic circuits to power, timing, and motion controls; (3) Applied knowledge of electrical and electronic block diagrams, wiring diagrams and/or schematics in order to understand construction/operation of industrial controls and troubleshoot malfunctions; and (4) Selection and use of proper test equipment in order to prevent loading of circuits and damage to parts. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the work of a Electronic Industrial Controls Mechanic. To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. JOB ELEMENTS:You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency with the following elements: (1) Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. (2) Use of Test Equipment: Electronics. PHYSICAL EFFORT Required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time.

WORKING CONDITIONS - Incumbent performs work inside areas that are adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. They are frequently, exposed to moving objects and vibration from machines. In shop areas, exposed to injury from moving machinery, falls from heights over 20 feet, deep pit areas that require environmental testing before working, danger of burns, electric shocks, bruises, cuts, shop noises, skin irritants and toxic environments. Uses moderate physical effort, fine finger dexterity and close visual attention. *REQUIRED TO LIFT/CARRY ITEMS WEIGHING UP TO 44 LBS. MECHANICAL LIFTING DEVICES/OTHER EMPLOYEES ARE AVAILABLE TO ASSIST WITH LIFTS OF 45 LBS AND OVER.
