Position Summary/Purpose of Position

The Data Quality Engineer will report directly to the Manager, Enterprise Data Management (EDM), University Decision Support (UDS) within the Division of Information Technology (DIT). This is an opportunity to join a newly formed unit (UDS) and contribute to a strategic initiative to improve data-driven decision-making on campus.

As a Data Quality Engineer at the University of Maryland, you will be responsible for data quality related to our Data Management tool suite to support the creation of a new Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) and data platform. Our data sets are focused on institutional information from multiple sources across the enterprise to meet our business needs. You will be responsible for creating, evaluating, executing and maintaining test plans and cases; data related activities such as data profiling, cleansing, de-duplication, standardization, and conversion. The Data Quality Engineer will support the testing process for defect fixes related to production support or project work, triage production issues and provide visibility to data quality issues with the business owners to fix the issues. The ideal candidate has a passion for quality, educational services and data technologies. The Data Quality Engineer will collaborate with the UDS team on a day-to-day basis.

The position requires a thorough knowledge of data test architecture. Advanced SQL skills are required, with experience of Master Data Management, and prior successful data warehouse implementation. Experience creating, executing, and validating test plans, and defining business requirements. Clear communication skills, demonstrated organization skills, and ability to collaborate with non-technical stakeholders are required to ensure data quality, user acceptance, and issue resolution. The Data Quality Engineer will create clear and concise technical documentation, and be capable of making timely critical decisions to be successful in this position.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, information systems or a related IT discipline

At least 3 years of quality assurance experience primarily in data solutions

At least 3 years of hands-on SQL development experience

Extensive experience creating and documenting test plans, test case scenarios, and processes

Well versed in testing methodologies (e.g. black box, white box, system, functional, exploratory, and automated testing)

Experience conducting user interviews and guiding customers in developing decision driven business requirements

Strong analytical skills, judgment and ability to understand complex business problems quickly

Experience supporting triage and investigation of data operational issues

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Strong understanding of Master Data Management

Experience working with at least 2 common database platforms ( i.e Oracle, SQL Server, Teradata, etc)


Experience working with educational data

Experience working with data virtualization tools

Experience with Informatica, SAS, or other MDM technologies

Experience with Business Intelligence tools such as Tableau, SAS, JasperReports, or AWS QuickSight

Self-motivated, energetic, detail oriented and a team player

Background in data engineering, data testing frameworks and automation

Data Analytics experience
