What You Will Be Doing
The Manager of Mechanical Design Engineering is responsible for leading the Mechanical Design Engineering team to interpret customer requirements into design, develop battery packs and modules according to project timing and budget.
This position will lead in the development of pouch cell interconnects, module and pack safety elements, such as pressure vents or Thermal Runaway Propagation mitigation, as well as design for thermal management and reliability with strong emphasis on manufacturing processes and techniques.
This position influences project outcomes by empowering team members to make decisions and helping others understand the importance of their work to gain support and buy-in. The candidate will also coach the engineering organization on technical issues such as technical feasibility, design review process and overall lifecycle management.
Define the engineering pipeline and roadmap for module and pack technology.
Manage growth of the mechanical team as needed by projects and company strategy.
Participate in complete company engineering strategy and capabilities.
Lead the mechanical design engineering team to develop state of the art battery systems.
Work closely with Cell R&D department to coordinate cell and module technology roadmaps.
Create and release assembly and functional test specifications related to battery assemblies.
Specify structural and thermal analysis.
Review of customer Requirements and subsequent translation into internal Systems Requirements Specification.
Establish and maintain best engineering practices and product lifecycle management techniques to ensure top quality for new product introductions.
Develop innovative cell mounting, connection mechanisms ad heat exchange architectures for thermal management.
Design for safety and high voltage.
Design for reliability and specific environmental conditions.
Collaborate with the manufacturing department to develop battery mass production processes and plan for global manufacturing capabilities.
Travel to overseas manufacturing plants regularly to maintain a global organization.
Work closely with cross-functional teams.
What You Need for this Position
Very strong understanding of architecture for electric vehicles and Li-Ion battery systems.
Experience in the design and development of high voltage electronic systems for automotive applications.
Experience in Lithium-Ion battery pack design, thermal management and safety.
Experience with DFMEA and DVP&R.
Experience with APQP, ISO 9001 and TS16949.
Extensive 3D CAD experience and engineering analysis (FEA, CFD, etc).
Experience with full life-cycle of automotive product development process, including design release, change management and project management.
High-volume manufacturing experience
Experience in obtaining product safety certification through an NRTL (e.g. UL, CE, CSA, CCC, etc.).
Proficient in GD&T.
Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
Masters degree is preferred.
+10 years of professional experience.
