Role Summary/Purpose

L3 SSG has an opportunity for a Sr Optical Design Engineer to join our talented engineering organization. Optical Design Engineers at L3 SSG are responsible for a wide range of assignments from conceptual design & analysis to as-built modeling & simulation during alignment & test of precision optical systems for space, airborne and ground environments in both aerospace and commercial communities. The Sr Optical Design Engineer will be a key member of a multi-disciplined and cross-organizational program team and is expected to interface with technical leads, program management, customers and suppliers as required.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Optical Design expertise and key optical engineering contributor in an inter-disciplinary program team.

  • Development of optical designs to satisfy system level requirements.

  • Support of opto-mechanical concept development.

  • Conduct engineering analyses and evaluation of optical systems.

  • Develop optical system performance predictions and tolerance analysis.

  • Provide technical solutions to various optics related problems.

  • Provide thorough documentation of work performed.

  • Participate in the development of plans for fabrication of components and assemblies, and the alignment, integration and test of optical systems.

  • Support customer reviews and telecons.

  • Provide design trades and optical design support to proposals.

  • Serve as technical interface to optical component suppliers.

  • Mentor junior level engineers.

Qualifications

Qualifications/ Requirements

  • BS in Optical Engineering or Physics, MS preferred.

  • Five to nine years of experience in optical design for precision optics and advanced optical systems for aerospace applications.

  • Experience in optical design & analysis tools such as Code V, Zemax, FRED or equivalent.

  • Experience with interferometers, test & alignment equipment, and metrology methods is desired

  • Strong analytical modeling and hardware build experience for low-rate aerospace production programs is a plus.

  • Experience as a technical lead is highly desired.

  • Experience supporting new business proposal or IR&D technology development efforts is a plus.

  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills for interfacing with senior management and customers as well as mentoring of younger engineers.

  • Strong self-motivation.

  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment.

  • Successful candidates must meet eligibility requirements to access U.S. classified information.

Primary airborne contributions include hyperspectral payloads for specialized overseas missions and critical line-of-sight control sub-systems for targeting systems.
