Performs highly skilled professional and technical work in the review, evaluation and approval of fire suppression and detection systems, fire alarms, smoke evacuation systems, and other fire and life safety protection features. This position will also lead and coordinate the fire inspection program of existing commercial and rental occupancies, for compliance with the fire code. This position works in cooperation with other building inspectors and with oversight from the Building Official. Hiring Salary = $31.52 - $36.26 per hour Full Salary = $31.52 - $40.93 per hour This position is a part of the PERA Coordinated plan Essential Duties: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Review and approve building construction plans for fire suppression and detection systems, fire detection systems, fire alarms, smoke evacuation systems, and other fire and life safety protection features. Review and approve site plans for adequate fire department access, water supply, hydrant locations, and other fire protection concerns. Provide consultation to owners, contractors, designers, architects, engineers on fire safety and building code requirements, construction methods and detail, and new products, standards, and technology. Review fire protection requirements for special hazards such as high-piled storage, flammable liquid storage and handling, hazardous materials storage and handling, and other special fire and life safety hazards. Evaluate construction alternatives for equivalency to the requirements of the building and fire codes and NFPA standards. Maintain proper records related to construction plan review and inspection duties and responsibilities. Perform inspections of fire protection equipment and alarm systems, for both new construction and alterations/leasehold improvements. Witness and approve on-site testing. Make field decisions and quickly evaluate situations and conditions to ensure that the construction process moves forward and adheres to code requirements. Maintain proper records related to inspections and testing of fire protection equipment and alarm systems. Lead and coordinate the fire inspection program of existing commercial occupancies, while working cooperatively with building owners and managers. Inform building owners/managers and tenants of violations, either in writing or verbally, and establish timelines for compliance. Conduct follow-up inspections and work with building owners/managers and tenants to ensure code corrections have been completed. Provide fire prevention and safety education to building owners/managers and tenants. Maintain database record system for fire inspection program of existing commercial occupancies. Perform multi-family housing annual inspections, while working cooperatively with the Code Enforcement Officer. Inform site superintendents and property managers of violations, either in writing or verbally, and establish timelines for compliance. Conduct follow-up inspections and work with site superintendents and property managers to ensure code corrections have been completed. Provide fire prevention and safety education to building owners/managers and tenants. Maintain proper records related to rental inspections program. Provide technical interpretation of fire safety codes and standards. Establish and maintain State contract with the State Fire Marshal on behalf of the City of Woodbury, to inspect Public and Charter Schools, Hotels/Motels, Adult Foster Care Residential Licensing, and Residential Day Care Licensing. Work cooperatively with other building inspection and planning staff during the plan review and inspection process. Coordinate pre-plan review of safety systems (i.e. sprinkler systems) in new buildings with the Public Safety Department personnel as needed. Maintain a current knowledge of new fire codes and changes to existing fire codes to ensure a thorough understanding of the industry and effective administration of codes.
